SMS scam offering cash prizes uncovered
SINAR Harian highlighted an SMS scam that offered potential victims cash prizes up to RM14,000 if they called up a certain number.
A recipient, who wished to be known only as Muralli, claimed he received such an SMS message on Sept 17.
He called the number to ask where the company’s office was, and the person at the other end, who called herself Siti, said it was located at the Petronas Twin Towers.
However, he was told the cash prize could only be banked into his account.
Muralli later called the number again and was passed to a man who declined to reveal his identity.
When he asked the man why they were trying to fleece the public, the man scolded him, saying the police always victimised Indonesian women working in Malaysia.
Muralli said he lodged a police report on the matter at the Klang district police headquarters on Tuesday.
